The US pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly will build a USD 2.5bn factory in Germany, more specifically in Alzey in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The company made the announcement on Friday after rumors have been circulating for the past week.

The new facilities will expand the production of injectable drugs and support the supply of diabetes medication and weight loss products, Bloomberg News reports.

Construction is scheduled to start early next year, depending on the speed of regulatory approvals. When production commences, it will provide jobs for 1,000 people - and Eli Lilly will have a total of six production sites in Europe.
